Loran visits the windy city

Loran visited Chicago for a weekend, and we all had a great time. On a perfect summer Saturday, we went for a 10 mile bike ride along the Lakeshore...stopping for an occasional rest, people watching, and taking in the view. Loran said that she had a wonderful visit, and the highlight for her was the "best salad of her life" which was about three heads of lettuce with all of the fixins' at the Grand Lux Cafe.

In addition to the day in the city, we also went to dinner at Claras, watched Wall-E, shopped for bridesmaid dresses, practiced yoga, saw Cirque du Soliel, and ate sushi. Loran also had her first pedicure. We were very glad to share this time with Loran before she heads off to college in the fall.

Italy Trip - San Gimignano

San Gimignano turned out to be one of our favorite places to visit. It is like stepping back in time to a medieval walled city in the heart of Tuscany. San Gimignano is known as the "Manhattan of Tuscany" due to all of it's towers. We also had an amazing bottle of white wine with dinner known as Vernaccia, which is unique to San Gimignano. We tried to buy a bottle of Vernaccia back here in Chicago and unfortunately, it was not the same brand and was not quite the same.

Italy Trip - Cinque Terra

This was one of the most spectacular views in all of Italy. It is the small town of Monterosso, which is one of the towns that make up the Cinque Terra. The Cinque Terra are five towns along the Mediterranean cost of Northern Italy, just north of Viarregio. Typically, one would visit the five towns by either taking a boat, hiking the trail that connects the five towns, or taking the train that runs underneath the mountain range. We took a very long, narrow, and treacherous road way that runs alone the rim of the mountain that overlooks the five towns. Unfortunately, this left us no time to visit the other four towns. When we make it back to Italy, it will be a priority to visit this area again.

Italy Trip - Getting Engaged - Viareggio

Since everyone has been asking "How did it happen?"

After a wonderful day of driving from Florence, visiting Lucca, seeing the leaning Tower of Pisa, and arriving in Viareggio with enough time for a quick swim in the Mediterranean, we took a quick shower, headed to the top of the hotel for a glass of wine, and watched the sun set. Our hotel was the Palace Hotel in Viareggio. The Palace hotel is a wonderful, boutique style hotel and is a tourist destination for many Europeans due to the beautiful beach. The hotel sits across the street from the beach with a rooftop that provides spectacular views of the sea.

After finishing our first glass of wine and reminiscing about the day, Rodger told Valerie how he had never been happier in his entire life and wanted to spend the rest of his life with her. Valerie replied that she was just as happy. Rodger dropped down on one knee and asked Valerie "Will you marry me?" With tears flowing down her cheeks, she said "Yes, I'll marry you."
We finished our wine, watched the sun drop below the horizon, and had dinner at an amazing little restaurant right on the beach. Priceless!!

Italy Trip - Leaning Tower of Pisa and Lucca

After leaving Florence, we headed to Lucca and Pisa. Lucca is very old Italian walled city that has unique historic charm. Puccini, probably the most famous of all Opera composers with titles such as Madame Butterfly, Tosca, La Boheme, and Turandot, worked and lived in Lucca. This was the highlight for Rodger!! After our short stay in Lucca, we drove over to Pisa.

You can't go to Italy without taking this photo. Mom and Dad suggested not to spend much time in Pisa, as there really wasn't much there to see except the leaning tower. (Actually, the Baptistery was more impressive than the tower!!) They were right, which is why we ran out of the car, took the picture, and headed straight towards the beach for Viareggio!

Italy Trip - Florence

We stayed in Florence for two days at the nicest hotel of our trip, the Hilton Gardens in Florence. A brand new hotel with very modern amenities and free Internet. Even though the hotel was on the edge of the city, the #22 bus would shuttle us from the city center to the hotel in a matter of minutes.

Our first day in Florence we visited the Academia, the Uffizi Gallery, and the Duomo. The Academia's main attraction is Michelangelo's David. The statue is positioned at the end of a long hallway, that is lined with unfinished works by Michelangelo, and sits under a glass dome. The statue is truly breathtaking and desires all the recognition it receives.

By the way, if you are taking a trip to Europe, we strongly recommend downloading Rick Steves' travel podcasts. They are very well done and are much less expensive than the audio tours (they are free).

After the Academia, we visited the most recognizable building in Florence, the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore or Duomo. The Dome, designed by Brunelleschi, was finished in 1436 and dominates the Florence skyline. The interior of the dome is completely covered in amazing Frescoes depicting final judgement while the rest of the Basilica is huge but unimpressive. A highlight is climbing the dome to get a panoramic view of Florence. The climb is grueling and scary (for Valerie), but the views and the experience is well worth it. Just outside of the Basilica is the Baptistery with the famous Golden Doors or Gates of Paradise. It is said these doors ushered in the Renaissance. Also near the Basilica is the famous Giotto Bell Tower. It was pointed out on many occasions that during his day, Giotto was the most unattractive man walking around Florence. How would you like to carry that moniker for eternity!?!?!

Our next stop was the Uffizi Gallery, which is well worth the visit. The highlight was getting to see Botticelli's Birth of Venus and Spring. It is hard to imagine this was the private collection of the Medici Family!! On the way to the Uffizi, you pass through the Piazza della Signoria. This famous Piazza is lined with a number of very recognizable statues and was the original location of Michelangelo's David. A replica now stands in it's place.

One more tip if your planning a trip to Florence, MAKE RESERVATIONS!! The lines for the Uffizi and Academia become quite long and could consume your entire day. By making reservations, we were able to stroll right on in.

On our last day in Florence we visited the Basilica of Santa Croce. This Basilica reminded us of the Westminster Abby in London in that some of Italy's most recognized names are buried here. Such as Michelangelo, Donatello, Galileo, Machiavelli, Rossini, Marconi, and Fermi. It is a must see.

We left Florence about midday and headed up to Lucca and Pisa.

Italy Trip - Venice

After spending a few days in the hospital with Colitis, the doctor released Valerie to travel and off to Italy we went. We left on Tuesday, June 10th on separate flights but both arrived safely in Venice on the afternoon of June 11th.

Upon arriving at the Marco Polo airport, we caught a cab to the same hotel the kids from Glenbard East were staying and then another cab to church where the kids were performing. There was some mix up with the hotels but we finally caught up with everyone just as they started their opening song. We really wanted to surprise everyone since the last word the kids and chaperones had received was that Valerie was still in the hospital. The concert was just fantastic and Valerie received more hugs than we could count. After having dinner with kids, we retired for the night after an extremely long day of travel.

We started the morning early on Thursday, June 12th and caught a train to the island of Venice. Venice was just as you could imagine, little canals forming alleys between many of the buildings, small bridges creating spectacular views, and the grand canal that equates to a waterway thoroughfare for the city. All goods and services must arrive on the island by boat so a continuous stream of shuttle boats can be seen along with smaller boats delivering goods to the stores and restaurants. I never thought I would seen DHL packages being delivered by Boat!!

Most of our day was meandering through the romantic cobble stone streets to capture a view of the Rialto Bridge, St. Mark's Basilica, Piazza San Marco, and taking a very relaxing Gondola ride. St. Mark's Basilica was truly breathtaking with gold colored mosaics covering the entire ceiling. It reminded us of the St. Louis Basilica. Unfortunately, they did not allow photography in the building, so you'll have to take our word for it. Also, due to the continually settling ground, the entire floor of the Basilica undulated like waves on the sea. some as much as a foot or more. We began to wonder how the building continued to stand at all.
We truly enjoyed our short stay in Venice and had to jump on a train to Florence in the afternoon. The train was very relaxing after a long day of walking of walking the Venice streets and allowed us to catch a little nap.

We arrived in Florence in the early evening on Wednesday, headed off to dinner, and off to bed.
